CHAPTER VI. OF THE FALL OF MAN, OF SIN AND
OF THE PUNISHMENT THEREOF
1. Our first parents being seduced by the subtlety and temptation of
Satan,
sinned in eating the forbidden fruit. This their sin God was pleased
according to his wise and holy counsel to permit, having purposed to
order it to his own glory.
2. By this sin they fell from their original righteousness and communion
with God, and so became dead in sin, and wholly defiled in all the
faculties and parts of soul and body.
3. They being the root of all mankind the guilt of this sin was imputed,
and the same death in sin and corrupted nature conveyed to all their
posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation.
4. From this original corruption, whereby we are, utterly indisposed,
disabled and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all
evil, do proceed all actual transgressions.
5. This corruption of nature, during this life doth remain in those that
are regenerated, and although it be through Christ pardoned and
mortified, yet both itself, and all the motions thereof, are truly
and properly sin.
6. Every sin, both original and natural, being a transgression of the
righteous law of God, and contrary thereunto, doth in its own nature,
bring guilt upon the sinner, whereby he is bound over to the wrath of
God, and curse of the law, and so made subject to death, with all
miseries spiritual, temporal, and eternal.
CHAPTER IX OF FREE WILL
2. Man, in his state of innocency, had freedom and power 새 will and to
do that which is good and well pleasing to God, but yet mutably, so
that he might fall from it.
3. Man, by his fall and state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of
will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation; so as a natural
man, being
altogether averse from that good, and dead in sin, is not able, by
his own strength, to convert himself, or to prepare himself thereunto.
4. When God converts a sinner and translates him into the state of
grace, he freeth him from his natural bondage under sin, and by his
grace alone enables him freely to will and to do that which is
spiritually good; yet so as that, by reason of his remaining
corruption, he doth not perfectly nor only will that which is good,
but doth also will that which is evil.
CHAPTER X OF EFFECTUAL CALLING
1.All those whom God has predestinated unto life, and those only, he is
pleased, in his appointed and accepted time, effectually to call, by
his word and Spirit, out of that state of sin and death in which they
are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ; enlightening
their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God;
taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them an heart of
flesh; renewing their wills, and by his almighty power determining
them to that which is good, and effectually drawing them to Jesus
Christ; yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by his
grace.
2.This effectual call is of God"s free and special grace alone, not from
anything at all foreseen in man; who is altogether passive therein,
until, being quckened and renewed by the Holy Spirit, he is thereby
enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and
conveyed in it.
4.Others not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the
word, and may have some common operations of the Spirit; yet they
never truly come unto Christ, and therefore cannot be saved; much less
can men not professing the Christian religion be saved in any other
way whatsoever, be they ever so diligent to frame their lives
according to the light of nature and the law of that religion they do
profess; and to assert and maintain that they may, is very permicious,
and to be detested.
CHAPTER XI OF JUSTIFICATION
1.Those whom God effectually callth he also freely justifieth; not by
infusing righteousness into them, but by pardoning their sins and by
accounting and accepting their persons as righteous: not for anything
wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ"s sake alone; not by
imputing faith itself, the act of beliving, or any other evangelical
obedience, to them as their righteousness; but by imputing the
obedience and satisfaction of Christ unto them, they receiving and
resting on him and his righteousness by faith; which faith they
have not of themselves; it its the gift of God.
2.Faith, thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness, is
the alone instrument of justification; yet is it not alone in the
person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving
graces, and is no dead faith, but worketh by love.
5.God doth continue to forgive the sins of those that are justified; and
although they can never fall from the state of justification, yet they
may by their sins fall under God"s fatherly displeasure, and not have
the light of his countenance restored unto them until they humble
themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and
repentance.
CHAPTER XII OF ADOPTION
All those that are justified, God vouchsafeth, in, and for his only
Son, Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace of adoption; by
which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and
privileges of the children of God; have his name put upon them,
receive the spirit of adoption; have access to the throne of grace wit
boldness; are anabled to cry, Abba, Father; are pitied, protected,
provided for, and chastened by him as by a father; yet never cast off,
but sealed to the day of redemption, and inherit the promises, as
heirs of everlasting salvation.
CHAPTER XIII OF SANCTIFICATION
1.They who were effectually called and regenerated, having a new heart
and a new spirit created in them, are further sanctified really and
personally, through the virtue of Christ"s death and resurrection,
by his Word and Spirit dwelling in them; the dominion of the whole
body of sin is destroyed, and the several lusts thereof are more and
more weakened and mortified, and they more and more quickened
and strengthened in all saving graces, to the practice of true
holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
2.This sanctification is throughout in the whole man, yet imperfect in
this life: there abide still some remnants of corruption in every
part: whence ariseth a continual and irreconcilable war; the flesh
lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.
3.In which war, although the remaining corruption for a time may much
prevail, yet through the cotinual supply of strength from the
sanctifying Spirit of Christ, the regenerate part doth overcome: and
so the saints grow in grace, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
CHAPTER XV OF REPETANCE UNTO LIFE
3.Although repentance be not to be rested in, as any satisfaction for sin
or any cause of the pardon thereof, which is the act of God"s free
grace in Christ, yet is it of such necessity to all sinners that none
may expect pardon without it.
4.As there is no sin so small but it deserves damnation, so there is
no sin so great that it can bring damnation upon those who truly
repent.

제6장 사람의 타락, 죄와 그로 인한 형벌
1.우리의 시조는 사탄의 간계와 유혹에 빠져서 금과를 따서 먹음으로 죄를 범하
였다. 하나님은 이러한 그들의 죄를 지혜롭고 거룩하신 자신의 뜻에 따라서
그것이 자신의 영광에 합당하도록 정하신 후에 묵인하시기를 기뻐하시었다.
2.저들은 이 죄로 인하여 자신들이 갖고 있는 근본 의를 상실하였고, 하나님과
의 교제도 단절되었으며, 그로써 죄에서 죽었고, 영과 육의 모든 기능과 여
러 분야들이 온전하게 더러워졌다.
3.저들이 온 인류의 뿌리이기에, 이러한 죄의 허물은 전가 되어졌고 죄에서 동
일한 죽음과 부패한 본성이 정상적인 출생에 따라서 저들로부터 저들의 모든
후손들 에게 유전되었다.
4.이러한 근본적인 부패로 인하여 인간은 모든 선에 대하여 온전하게 싫증이 나
게 되고 무능해지며 모든 선에 역행하게 되고 모든 악을 전적으로 좇게 만드
는 구체적인 모든 범죄가 행하여지게 된다.
5.이러한 부패한 본성은 이 세상에서 사는 동안에 중생한 사람들의 마음 속에
도 남아 있게 된다. 그리고 그리스도에 의해서 이 본성의 사함을 받고 극
복이 되었다고 하여도, 이 본성 자체와 그 본성에서 나오는 모든 활동은 사실
상 그리고 틀림없이 죄가 된다.
6.원죄와 본성의 죄 등 모든 죄는 의로운 하나님의 율법을 범하고 그 율법에 역
행하는 일로써 그 성격상 죄인에게는 죄값을 가져오고 그로 인하여 죄인은 하
나님의 진노와 율법의 저주를 받도록 되어 있다. 따라서 죄인은 영적이고 현
세적으로 가장 비참하고도 영원한 죽음을 당하게 된다.
제9장 자유의지
2.사람은 자신이 무죄한 상태에서 선하고 하나님을 기쁘시게 할 만한 것을 생각
도 하고 행활 수 있는 자유와 능력을 가지었으나 변할 수도 있는 일이기에 그
러한 일을 행치 못할 수도 있었다.
3.사람은 자신의 타락으로 죄의 상태에서 구원에 수반되는 영적인 어떤 선을 행
사 할 수 있는 모든 의욕을 완전히 상실하였고, 그러기에 자연인은 그러한 선
에서 완전히 역행하여 죄에서 죽은 연고로 그 자신의 능력으로는 자신이 회개
하거나 회개에 이르도록 준비할 수 있는 능력이 없는 것이다.
4.하나님은 한 죄인을 회개시키시고 그를 은혜의 상태에 이르게 하실 때에 죄
아래에 있는 그의 본성적인 속박에서부터 그를 해방시키신다. 그리고 그로 하
여금 하나님의 은혜에 의해서만 영적으로 선한 것을 자유롭게 생각하고 행사
할 수 있도록 하신다. 그러나 그에게 남아있는 부패성 때문에 죄인은 선한 것
을 완전하게 행할 수가 없을 뿐 아니라 악을 행하게 된다.
제10장 효과적인 소명
1.하나님께서 생명을 주시기로 예정된 모든 사람들, 이들만이 하나님이 정하시
고, 합당하신 때에 자신의 말씀과 영으로써 본성적으로 저들이 타고난 죄와
죽음의 상태로부터 예수 그리스도로 인하여 은혜와 구원에 이르도록 효과적으
로 부르시며 영적으로나 구원적으로 하나님에 관한 것을 이해할 수 있도록 저
들의 마음
